Dr. Johnson's book is valid Americana: he knows his ranches, cowboys, Indians, cattlemen, horses, cattle and small animals. He writes about and paints all of these subjects using as a backdrop the Badlands of western South Dakota, the Pine Ridge area, and the Sandhills of Nebraska. All of these stories, poems and paintings are a record of his experiences as a Veterinarian, Artist, Humorist, Poet and Philosopher. He has won numerous art awards, including the Nebraskaland Show in North Platte, Nebraska, the Box Butte Show in Alliance, Nebraska, the National Annual Art Show in Dubois, Wyoming, and many in Mesa, Arizona where he spends his winters. Doc served in both the European and Pacific theatres of the war in WWII, and in his odd moments there did a bit of sketching. He was able to resume his interest in art upon retiring from his busy veterinary practice. He uses photo-realism to a limited degree, preferring to add drawings to his photographic references.
